Glass (2009) for orchestra
Glass for Youth Orchestra was commissioned by Kenneth Thompson, conductor of the Toledo Youth Orchestra, in 2009. This composition reflects on various qualities of glass, and was inspired by Toledo, the “glass city.” There are three sections. The first focuses on glass’ ability to split light, as in a prism. Listen for lines that begin together and separate into different parts. The second part focuses on glasses ability to reflect, as in a mirror. This section is full of symmetrical harmonies, doubled melodies, and retrograded lines. The third and final section is a return to the beginning. As always, I am indebted to my teacher, Marilyn Shrude for her continual care and guidance.
